Aamir – An activist and a gentleman

  • IndiaGlitz, [Tuesday,March 31 2009]

Aamir Khan has always been a man of trends – whether he’s making them or breaking them! He made a thought provoking movie like 'Taare Zameen Par' and for the first time, a powerhouse actor took second place to a child in a movie. Aamir continued to shake things up by not only declining to appear in major award ceremonies, but also turning down an offer to have his wax imitation put up in Madame Tussauds, in London. As if that was not enough, he’s proving that he can put his money where his mouth is by involving himself in various causes.

First and foremost is his message to the people urging them to vote, which was his response to The Times of India’s Lead India 2009 campaign. In the actor’s own words, taken from his letter to the TOI editor, “I woke up on the 3rd of March to a very bold and strongly worded message on the front page of The Times of India. My sincere hope that it provokes all to get out there and vote against everything that we as a nation are fed up of. If there’s any way that I can be of help to spread the message then just give me a shout.’’

As part of his ongoing efforts, rather than campaign for a particular party or canvas for votes, the 'Ghajini' star is recording a public message that will be sent out as voice messages to everybody's mobile phone urging them to vote. This social service initiative is being launched by an NGO called ADR (Association of Democratic Reform). Aamir has also promised to make three ads, free of cost, to support the campaign.

And if you think the actor is edging into politics, Khan wants to set the story straight: he’d rather represent people by making their voice his than put on the political hat. And this man of many faces is not just a supporter of local issues, but uses his image into supporting international issues too – by lending his face to endorse WWF’s Earth Hour campaign on 28th March. Is it any wonder that Mr. Khan was the face of Incredible India?
